Sensitivity
Ankles and the top of the foot have thin skin over the bone, so many people find them more sensitive than fleshier areas. Everyone is different — see does a tattoo hurt?
While it heals
- Choose footwear that doesn't press or rub on the tattoo, and keep it clean.
- Keep sand and dust off it, and stay out of the sea and pools until your artist says it has healed.
- Keep it out of direct sun while it heals — cover it with loose clothing or shade rather than putting sunscreen on it, unless your artist or doctor advises otherwise.
Sun and fading
Feet and ankles in sandals see a lot of sun. Once healed, protect them with a broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher, reapplied at least every two hours and more often after swimming. See tattoos and the sun.
Timing your trip
If beach days are the point of your holiday, a foot or ankle tattoo near the end of your stay lets you enjoy the sea first. See your first tattoo on holiday, then send your idea with your dates.
General information, not medical advice. Your artist's instructions come first; for anything worrying, see a doctor.
