No tattoo is completely risk-free. Most tattoos done hygienically on healthy skin heal without problems, and careful aftercare lowers the risk further; the studio explains the aftercare for your tattoo and what to look out for.

Disinfection reduces germs on surfaces; sterilisation is a more thorough process meant to eliminate all microorganisms, used for reusable instruments. Ask any studio which of the two applies to what.

No. Some warmth, redness and swelling are normal in the first days. Redness that gets worse, heat, pus or a fever can mean infection, and an itchy rash or bumps can be an allergic reaction — see a doctor in either case.

It is uncommon, but yes — sometimes within days, rarely months or years later, and usually to one colour, most often red. Tell the studio if you have reacted to a tattoo before.

No. It depends on the old tattoo's size, darkness and placement, and a cover-up is usually larger and darker. Send photos of the old tattoo and the studio will tell you honestly what is possible.

Not always. Laser removal usually takes many sessions, does not always clear a tattoo completely and is done by medical providers. See cover-up or removal.

You can be at the beach, but the new tattoo must stay covered, in the shade and out of the water until it has healed.

No. Followers, ratings and a studio's age say little about hygiene on their own. Look at healed work, ask how equipment is handled and ask for written aftercare.

Please come to your appointment sober — public-health guidance advises against being tattooed under the influence of alcohol. Afterwards, follow your artist's aftercare; see before your tattoo.

While it heals, avoid activities that make the tattooed area rub or stay soaked in sweat. If you do exercise, clean and dry it gently afterwards and wear loose clothing over it. Ask your artist how long to take it easy for your placement.

Often yes, but tell the studio. With a skin condition such as eczema or psoriasis, dermatologists advise waiting until it is stable and not tattooing over active patches; talk to your dermatologist first.
