Why they fade sooner
Few areas are washed, rubbed and moved as much as hands and fingers. That wear, plus the sun, means lines on hands and fingers can soften or break up sooner than on the arm or back. It is normal for them to need a touch-up later.
Designs that suit hands and fingers
- Simple, bold shapes rather than very fine lines.
- Open space between lines, so they don't merge as they age.
- Short words in a clear letterform, not tiny script.
Healing while you use your hands
Keep the tattoo clean, wash your hands before touching it and pat it dry — you can't rest a hand the way you can rest a shoulder. On a holiday that means thinking ahead: sand, sea water, sun cream and pool water are all things hands touch. Follow your artist's aftercare and see tattoo aftercare.
The visibility question
A hand or finger tattoo is seen by everyone you shake hands with. Think about your work and daily life first; if you are unsure, a spot that is easier to cover may suit you better.
